FSMD Functional Partitioning for Low Power Using Energy Estimation and Bounds

Partitioning a system has been shown an effective method for power reduction. Partitioning can be applied to either the controller or the datapath. A recent FSMD functional partitioning technique have shown that when partitioning is applied to both the controller AND the datapath, a much greater power saving is achievable. However, the partitioning problem is known to be NPcomplete. In this paper, we describe an algorithm that applies an efficient energy estimation and bounds model to the FSMD functional partitioning technique. This allows us to reduce the time to search through the solution space.
